About Cliftonville
The seaside town of Cliftonville adjoins Margate on the East Kent coast. Margate is one of Englands oldest seaside resorts and since the early 18th Century, people have visited, first for health reasons and more recently for pleasure and a change of scenery.
In the early 19th Century when English seaside resorts were massively popular, prosperous middle class visitors wanted better and more luxurious accommodation than that which Margate could offer. So, development started on fields and open land to the east of Margate and the new area of Cliftonville was born. Originally named ‘New Town’ then ‘Peel Town’, the area hosted large and wonderfully lavish hotels for the discerning visitor of the era. It’s greatest prosperity was between 1875 and 1925 when Cliftonville was regarded as ‘well mannered’ and elegant’.
Between the wars, Cliftonville became more residential but was still considered the ‘respectable’ end of Margate away from noise and pollution. However, the wars changed society and along with it, visitors’ tastes. People wanted greater facilities in accommodation and entertainment than the area could provide.
The 1960s saw the growing popularity of holidays abroad. Along with many other seaside towns, Cliftonville suffered and many hotels were demolished or converted to residential accommodation.
Although Cliftonville today is a shadow of it’s majestic past, it’s rather young but rich history can be felt through every street. Cliftonville’s mile long high street of shops caters for a diverse population and, if you look above the shop fronts, the high street’s elegant history can still be recognised. And of course, the coastline still provides the invigorating fresh air and the sandy beaches that were so popular with the Victorians.
Within a short walking distance of Dalby Square are Cliftonville High Street (Northdown Road), the Beaches and Promenade, Crazy Golf, Ten Pin Bowling, Indoor Bowls, Snooker Club, Nightclub, several Pubs, Cafes, Casino, Bandstand, Chinese, Indian and Thai Restaurants and several Churches. The local bus service can be caught from the end of the street which loops around all the major towns of Thanet.
